We're Off To Ethiopia!!!!

SO much has been happening this past week, both at our house (as we have dear friends visiting from Wyoming for the week) and on the adoption front...

WE HAVE A COURT DATE!!!! JULY 28!!! We're anticipating leaving on July 24 and arriving home July 30, and we're SO looking forward to meeting our baby boy!!! :) He will be just over 3-months-old when we get to hold him in our arms for the first time. :) If all goes well, we will bring him home 4-6 weeks after court, probably by early September!!! It's hard to believe this day has FINALLY arrived, and yet, in some ways this past year has flown by!

So, today we hope to have the official OK from AGCI to book our plane tickets, and the list-making and donation-gathering begins!!!

I'll post more when things slow down a bit around here. Today we're off to the local water park with our Wyoming friends, tomorrow exploring the Children's Museum, Sunday church and band concert in the park...a LOVELY weekend coming up! And all the more blessed now that we really and truly have a COURT DATE!!! :) PRAISE THE LORD!!!

Birth Family Letter and Album

What a difficult and beautiful opportunity we've been given, to try and communicate with our little guy's birth family via letter and photo album! How to express all of the joy, anticipation, excitement, and love you're feeling while also acknowledging the many emotions that his birth family must be feeling - loss, sorrow, grief, worry, not knowing...and how to represent the entirety of who we are as a family in the best way possible through 20 images/photos in an album our baby boy's birth family will receive...

It's been quite a task this past week. And, while we're not prepared to share our letter with you all out there (we feel that this should be seen by our little guy's birth family first, and perhaps, only), we did want to show you some of the images/photos we selected to include in this album. It's more difficult than you might think, narrowing down your existence to 20 photos in an attempt to describe the who's, what's, when's, where's, why's, and how's of your life to a family you've never met in another country. And, not just any family, but the family who has entrusted YOU with the bringing up of their precious child. WOW.

Nathan and I found ourselves thinking a lot about what we would want to know about "the other family" if (God-forbid) we ever had to hand over our children to anyone other than ourselves to raise, to love. Our conclusion: Yes, some of the "externals" are important - will they have a roof over their heads, enough food to eat, a good education, a place to attend church, access to health care? But, much more than that, it's the "internals" - the things inside the person who would be raising our children - the character of that person, whether or not that person can love our children unconditionally, what kind of advice they would give our children in a variety of life circumstances, if their faith in God is real and based on their understanding of who Jesus is, how they respond to conflict, if they can give thanks in all things, etc. And how in the world can one communicate all of those "internals" in a 1-page letter and 20-picture album?

That said, here are a number of images/photos that we selected...

And there you have it! Our attempt... :)

3-months

Our baby boy is 3-months old today!

Tonight, I'm hoping/praying for...

...the softening of his heart, even now, to the voice of the Holy Spirit.
...his continued growth and healthy development.
...a smooth transition into this crazy household.
...a chance to meet his birth family.
...all of the amazing people who have already loved and cared for this child well in his first 3 months of life - THANK YOU!
...the opportunity to hold our little guy in our arms by his 4-month "birthday" :)
...God to be glorified in and through our precious little one - his life, his perspective, his disposition, his successes, his failures, his story.

How we love you, little one.

Our "Next Steps" Call

We got a chance to talk with our caseworker this afternoon about what's coming next for us in the adoption process! We were actually her very first "Next Steps" call since the new 2-trip policy has officially gone into place. :)

Here's a basic run-down of what we learned:

--Before the Ethiopian government will assign us a court date, several government agencies (there) need to review both our information/dossier, and all of the information they have on our little guy, and both of these agencies essentially write up recommendations - one saying that our baby boy was relinquished willingly and everything's on the up-and-up with his situation, and one saying that we are qualified to be adoptive parents to an Ethiopian-born child.

--Once those recommendations are in AND AGCI has his birth certificate in hand, THEN we are assigned a court date/can start planning to travel. At this point in time, AGCI's best estimate is that we will be waiting approximately one month before being assigned a court date. Could be sooner, could be later (of course), but that seems to be their best guess at this point.

--Side note: We are one of 4 families waiting to have our file opened/for those two recommendations and our kiddo's birth certificate.

--Within a few days or a week or so of having our file opened, we will be assigned a court date. This court date could be a little bit later than it was previously because, we just found out, that the birth family actually appears in court BEFORE we do. Therefore, the court now has to make time for 2 court dates for each adoption case; evidently, it's difficult to tell at this point in time exactly how quickly the courts will be able to deal with the increase in court appearances.

--As long as our little guy stays healthy and developing well, we likely won't hear anything else about him until we arrive in Ethiopia to meet him. So, likely no more photos or updates :( But we pray that all stays well with him.

--We likely won't find out until our 2nd trip whether or not we will have the opportunity to meet his birth family. Completely mixed emotions about that one! Our caseworker did ask us to put together a photo album for his birth family and to write a letter to them as well, and to get that back to AGCI in the next week or two. So, that'll be something good to keep us busy. :)

Other adoption news:

--We have our travel immunization appointments scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. It will be good to have those under our belts (and no, that was not an attempt at a pun :)).

--And something else I just wanted to throw out there: Maybe you've noticed that I rarely refer to our little guy by name which is intentional at this point. We use his African name at home when we're speaking of him...We intend to keep at least a portion of his African name, but will likely give him an additional first name as well. But we don't plan to share his complete name until after we pass court, and he legally becomes OURS! So, there you have it.

--I'll try and update about our immunization experience sometime soon. And we'll definitely keep you posted as we find out more info. :)

Crusin' Right Along...

Well, on the adoption homefront...

Our referral paperwork is officially all in to AGCI now, and we are looking forward to our "Next Steps" call with our caseworker on Monday. We're not exactly sure what to expect with that, but we do know that we are beginning to have more and more questions about all of the details as our court date/travel times are drawing nearer and nearer!!! :) So, hopefully we'll get many of those questions answered then.

On the two delightful 3-year-olds here at home front...

We took our girlies to the Zoo a few days ago. There was a large, pretend cow there with a "real" udder/teets you could try to milk. Sylvia belts out, "Hey, Mom, you've got udders like that!" Lovely. Just lovely. And what does a Mama say to that? "Yes, dear. People mamas feed their babies milk just like cow mamas feed their babies milk" or something kind of like that is what came out of my mouth...Sheesh.

And Evelyn's most hilarious recent comment...(Daddy has been putting wood floor in most of our upstairs this week, so it's been tools and work, tools and work).

Daddy: (in an exasperated voice) Oh, no!
Evelyn: What's wrong, Daddy?
Daddy: Oh, nothing. Daddy just made a mistake.
Evelyn: AGAIN?!?!
(Mama and Daddy look at each other; Mama roars with laughter, Daddy shakes his head and slowly grins)

So, there you have it! I'll try and post again after our Monday afternoon call. Hopefully we'll have more "news" then.
